The Tide Forecast
and Warning Centre has been operating in
Venice since 1979 it gives the local citizens all the relevant
information about the tides and timely alarm warnings if
exceptionally high tides are expected, using: telephone answering
service connected to 120 automatic research lines, direct telephone
contact with the staff in the operational centre, tidal graphs
published daily in the two daily newspapers, four illuminated panels
in the busiest parts of town with around the clock information about
the existing tides and those in the next few hours, information
points in 4 newspaper shops and in the entrances of 3 of the Council
buildings, pedestrian walkways connecting Piazza Roma and the train
station with the majority of offices, a digital acoustic system
instead of the old sirens with a different kind of warning depending
on the level of the tide, free of charge SMS to the residents of the
historical centre and those who run a business on the mainland.
