An adaptation in period costume of one of Camillo Boito’s tales and set during the Third War of Italian Independence (1866). According to the critics, Luchino Visconti’s film is perhaps the turning-point in Italian cinema, towards Neorealism. "Senso" is one of the best examples of Italian melodrama, where music, painting and popular literature all come together. This huge historical ‘fresco’ is set in the context of a private drama: a noble Venetian lady falls head over heels in love with an Austrian officer. Great attention to detail in the scenes and settings, especially in the opening scenes with the notes of Giuseppe Verdi’s Trovatore and the splendid Teatro "La Fenice".
