Joseph Losey’s film, an Italo-French production, is inspired by James Hadley Chase’s novel Eve (1945). An English writer meets a classy call-girl in Venice and falls in love with her, becoming her slave. After causing his wife to commit suicide, the writer considers killing Eva, the call-girl, but chickens out. An erotic melodrama about degradation caused by power and an upset in the relationship between the sexes. This “film noir” is set in a black-and-white Venice: a special atmosphere full of chiaroscuro effects and profiles.
