Bruno Maderna (Venice, 1920 – Darmstadt, 1973) was an important composer and orchestra conductor in the 1900s.
The pupil of Malipiero and Scherchen, he was very active as a conductor, especially of contemporary music. He taught in Darmstadt, Milan, England and then again in Germany, where he was appointed permanent conductor of the Internationales Kammerensemble of Darmstadt.
In 1955, he founded the phonology studio at Italian State Television (RAI) with Luciano Berio and was one of the first in Italy to compose electronic music, such as his Notturno (1955), Musica su due dimensioni for flute (1957) and Continuo (1957).
Maderna was restless and curious, two aspects of his character than let him investigate new composition techniques and to produce music falling into many categories. His work can be ascribed to the post-Webern school, free of fixed forms and very interested in new sonority.
Among his works are: the work for radio Don Perlimplin (1962), his theatrical works Hyperion (1964) and Satyricon (1973), a composition for orchestra Quadrivium (1969) and various works for solo instruments and orchestra, such as his concerts for oboe written in 1962 and 1967.
