Pietro Lombardo (Carona, in the province of Bergamo, 1435 – Venice 1515) was the leading exponent of a large family of sculptors and architects from the Canton Ticino in Switzerland very active in the Veneto region in the 1400s and 1500s.
He worked in Padua and Venice, where he set up a flourishing workshop that was awarded commissions from through the Veneto region.
He specialised in funerary sculpture and, with the assistance of his sons, produced many fine funereal monuments, such as those for Pasquale Malipiero (1462), Nicolò Marcello (1474) and Pietro Mocenigo (1476), all in the basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. The sepulchre of Doge Mocenigo is a perfect example of Pietro Lombardo’s sculpture.
His architectural works in Venice include the restoration of the Church of San Giobbe (1480) and the design for the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (1481-89).
