Architectural styles

Venetian houses changed over the years to meet the needs of this special “streetless” city.
Since visitors usually arrived by boat, the façades facing the canals were given special architectural features, while the other sides of the buildings (accessible by squares or alleys) were generally more modest in appearance.

Without being an expert in architecture and with a bit of careful observation, we can discover the age of a Venetian palace from its façade. There are four basic architectural styles, typical of each period: byzantine, gothic, renaissance, baroque.
