The museum is named after Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, a young Spaniard from Granada who moved to Venice in 1889. A multifaceted character, at the beginning of the 20th Century he bought "Palazzo Pesaro", a building in the late Gothic style, and turned it into his own atelier of photography, set design and theatre, textiles and painting.
The original rooms and structures, upholstery and collections have been preserved. Mariano Fortuny spent the rest of his life in the rooms of this palace, a worthy setting for his precious Fortuny fabrics with their threads of gold and silver, created using old Renaissance techniques and dyes.
In 1956, after his death, "Palazzo Pesaro" together with its collection was donated to the city of Venice and turned into a museum. Today, the Fortuny Museum is mainly concerned with visual communication disciplines.
