One of the most famous hotels in Europe, with its characteristics deep pink façade the Danieli is an important landmark along the Riva degli Schiavoni, the city’s top promenade.
The main building is the original Palazzo Dandolo, commissioned and built in the 14th Century by the noble Dandolo family of Venice (with no fewer than four Doges in the family tree). In 1630 the palace saw the very first performance of an opera in Venice: the Rape of Proserpine by Monteverdi.
In 1822 it was turned into a hotel, immediately becoming the “in” place for writers, musicians and artists. It many famous guests over the years include Balzac, Proust, Dickens, Ruskin, Debussy and Wagner.
