Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo is found in the area near the church of Madonna dell’Orto. This palace has a wide asymmetrical façade with two main entrances in a typical sixteenth-century style.
The mezzanine floor has a room (now a chapel) with frescoes by Giandomenico Tiepolo and a Triumphal Procession of Giorgio Contarini, Duke of Jaffa (Zaffo). The beautiful gardens run down to the lagoon and were designed by Francesco Guardi in the 1700s.
The palace complex also includes the so-called Casino degli Spiriti, a sixteenth-century building that was used for literary meetings, attended by many intellectuals during the Renaissance, such as Pietro Aretino and other important figures.
