The name of this church is thanks to a large statue of the Madonna and Child found in a kitchen garden in 1377.
Miraculous powers were immediately attributed to this and so the statue was taken to the nearby church of "San Cristoforo" which was then renamed the church of "Madonna dell’Orto". One of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Venice, the work of Tiberio da Parma, has seen several additions over the centuries.
The interior is full of light and the Greek marble columns and wooden ceiling give it soaring lines. The church contains many paintings and altarpieces, including works by Cima da Conegliano and Jacopo Tintoretto.
The church underwent major restoration work in the 1970s, funded by the “Venice in Peril” Committee, restoring the church to its former splendour.
