The vast Campo San Polo was an important market and traditional venue for various events in the past, especially in the 16th Century when, not just a busy marketplace, it was used for festivals, masked plays, ceremonies, dances and bull baiting.
There are four buildings of special interest around Campo San Polo: on the eastern side is Palazzo Soranzo, originally two separate buildings and still owned by the family Soranzo; in the Northwest corner stands Palazzo Mocenigo, once home to the eccentric English writer Frederick Rolfe (1860-1913), also known as “Baron Corvo”; then there is Palazzo Donà and Palazzo Tiepolo.
Today this wide open space is a very popular place to hang out with the young. Campo San Polo has also been used for major carnevale celebrations since 1979.
