These are some of the few areas where freshwater rivers and brackish waters come into contact. All the coots (Fulica atra) and ducks (Anatidae) in the lagoon concentrated here during the migration season and winter months. The reeds and rushes are ideal nesting places for many species of Ardea, such as the red heron (Ardea purpurea), the little egret (Egretta garzetta), the night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), the rare marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) and many sparrows and other small birds (Passeriformes).
Small mammals are include the rice field-mouse and the shrew (Sorex araneus), plus the badger (Meles meles) and the European polecat (Mustela putorius).
This is also a good habitat for reptiles, such as various types of water snake and terrapins.
